Description

This house, located at 59 Shrewsbury Road in Birkenhead, was built around 1884 by George Smith of Chester and is designed in the Elizabethan style. It is constructed of brick with some mock timbering and features a plain tiled roof. The building is two stories high with three main bays and a central entrance, along with a recessed service wing to the right.

The central gabled bay, which is three stories tall, is set forward and includes a panelled and part-glazed door with a four-centred arch, situated in a porch supported by brick piers. Above the door, there is a five-light mullioned and transomed window that spans the gable. The apex of the gable features a four-light mullioned window that projects on corbels.

On the right side, the bay has a triple round-arched window with moulded brick mullions at the ground floor, while the upper storey is timbered and includes a casement window. The recessed range beyond has a metal-framed casement window at ground level and a four-light round-arched window with moulded brick mullions above. A decorative diaper work band runs below the eaves, and the side gable is crow stepped.

The left-hand bay features a triple ogee-arched window with moulded brick mullions and stained glass margin lights at the ground floor, along with a four-light mullioned window above. The return elevation also has a crow stepped gable, which includes a two-light moulded brick ogee mullioned window at ground level and three-light windows above that do not align. Moulded brick sill bands are present on each floor, and there is a large single-storey music room set back beyond. The building is topped with moulded brick axial stacks.
