Description

Poundisford Lodge is a country house and detached service block with a linking wall, dating from around 1550. It was likely ceiled in the 17th century, with an early 18th century addition to the southwest. The building underwent internal alterations and enlargements on the north and south sides in the mid-19th century, with the west wall being brought forward during this time and the entrance relocated to the east front. The exterior features roughcast over random rubble and brick on the central west front, with a plinth, slate roofs, coped verges, and a hipped roof on the 18th century addition. Tall external stone stacks rise from the north and south sides, and the building is arranged in a U-shape. It is probably an open hall house that has been ceiled, with a billiard room added to the south side and an irregularly shaped smoking room on the north side, which abuts a powder closet on the west front.

The west front has two and a half storeys and is composed of 1:4:1 bays, featuring 19th century Tudor style windows. The left gable end has three-light windows, while the center has four single-light leaded windows below a quatrefoil pierced parapet. The ground floor contains two-light windows, with the left one situated where a doorway to the original entrance was blocked. The right gable end has a two-light window in the attic and three-light windows below, with two-bay re-entrant angles. The two-storey 18th century extension has a single bay lit on the right return (south front) with three-light casements. Beyond this, the south front has a single-storey, flat-roofed, irregularly shaped smoking room extension, and to the right is a large external stack from the kitchen. The north front features a single-storey, two-bay billiard room.

The entrance is located on the east front, accessed through a gabled porch with a 19th century door. A wall returns to the southeast of the porch, abutting a two-storey service block that is not visible and was reported to be in very poor condition at the time of the survey in April 1985.

Inside, there are two fine late 16th century plasterwork barrel-vaulted bedrooms with overmantels, one of which is dated 1593. The interior also includes late 16th century and early 18th century panelling, with an overmantel painting in one bedroom, and a fine chimney piece from around 1740 that features swags and masks similar to those at Halswell House in Goathurst. There is a small bolection moulded fireplace in the hall, but much of the interior has been altered in the mid-19th century. The building was generally in poor condition at the time of the survey in April 1985.
