Description
Poundisford Farmhouse dates from the 16th century, with additions and alterations made in the 17th and 18th centuries, and further changes in the 20th century. The farmhouse is constructed of roughcast over rubble and cob in the northern wing, painted brick on a rubble plinth in the central bay, with roughcast beyond. It has double Roman tiled roofs, with a half-hipped clay tile roof to the northern wing. Brick stacks are located on the west gable end and in the centre of the south front, marking the junction between the brick and roughcast sections. The building likely began as a two-cell layout running east to west, later extended one bay south with an agricultural store, and with another two-cell block to the north-west. The west front features a cob wing with two raking buttresses, a three-light leaded iron casement in the right return gable, and a half-glazed 20th-century door. A two-light leaded iron casement sits in the gable end of the original range, with a dormer window above and three-light windows below in the brick bay. There is also a segmental-headed, four-light, unglazed, louvred opening on the ground floor of the right side. A bread oven on the rear elevation has been partly rebuilt and extended in the late 20th century. The interior is reported to contain evidence of cruck construction in the east-west range, and step and runout stops to chamfered beams in the central block. The northern block was reroofed in the 19th century, and the precise development of the farmhouse is unclear.
