Description

The stables at Berkley House, located about 50 metres north of the Church of St Mary, are a mid-18th century coach house and stables built from rubble Doulting stone and covered with plain clay tiles, featuring one slope in double Roman tiles and a hipped roof. The structure is two storeys high, with a recessed double pile central block flanked by projecting side wings. At the top, there is a central square wooden ventilation turret topped with a lead cupola and an iron wind vane.

The front features two wide elliptical-headed openings in the centre, supported by a central buttress, with keyed semi-circular heads and chamfered openings. Above each inward-facing elevation, there are oval chamfered pitching eyes. The side wings have shallow semi-circular heads and blocked recesses, with square-headed wooden casement windows on each side. All openings are framed with ashlar quoins, and the wall on this side has a stucco rendering.

Above the central buttress, there is a stone lantern with cusped openings, which has medieval origins and may have come from an earlier church, along with a short stone chimney. To the right, a second stone chimney rises above the eaves.
