Description

The Former Stuckey and Bagehot Warehouse is a warehouse built around the late 18th century, with extensions added around 1820 and 1837. It was constructed for the Parrett Navigation Company. The building features English bond red brick, with Flemish bond extensions, and has clay plain tile roofs with hipped ends.

The main structure has a long rectangular plan and is two stories high, with a three-by-three bay south front. There are blocked loading doors on both the ground and first floors to the left and right, flanked by small windows with two-light frames. All windows and doorways are topped with cambered brick arches, and there is another blocked window to the right of the center. At the rear, there are single-storey wings, with the west wing possibly being originally open-ended.

Inside, the ground floor of the main range is divided into two bays by brick cross-walls, and it features unchamfered floor beams. The roof consists of ten bay tie-beam and king-post trusses with struts and staggered butt-purlins. There is a staircase with stone treads located within the rear wing against the rear wall of the main range, and the rear wing has an aisled tie-beam roof.

This warehouse was built by the Parrett Navigation Company, which was owned by Vincent Stuckey and Walter Bagehot.
