Description
Barclays Bank, originally a hotel, was built around the 1830s. It features painted render and moulded stone eaves, with a pantile roof and brick stacks at the gable ends. The building has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high with a symmetrical three-window arrangement. The upper floor windows have flat arches, with 3/6-pane sashes on the second floor and 6/9-pane sashes on the first floor, where a cill band runs across the facade. The ground floor has three elliptical arches with a string course at the impost level; the central arch is narrower and contains 20th-century double doors with a plain overlight, flanked by wide tripartite plate-glass sash windows topped with elaborate elliptical fanlights featuring radiating and elliptical-curved glazing bars. The window on the right has a cash dispenser where the lower sash was. The interior has not been inspected. Historical records indicate that a photograph from 1881 shows the building originally constructed with Flemish-bond brick and fine elliptical gauged brick arches, along with a large lamp over the door and the name "Bristol Arms Commercial Hotel" painted on the platband.
