Southfield House and Attached Walls, Gate Piers and Gates

Southfield House, along with its attached walls, gate piers, and gates, is a house dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed from squared, coursed limestone and features a slate roof with brick stacks at the gable ends and wrought-iron brackets supporting the gutters. The house has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high, with a symmetrical three-window arrangement. Flat stone arches frame the 8/8-pane sash windows. The entrance features a doorcase with reeded imposts leading to an elliptical arch, a fanlight, and a five-panel door. To the left, there is a cellar with a stone-mullioned window.

Inside, the house has six-panel doors. The staircase, located at the rear of the left-hand room, showcases ivory or bone inlay on the wreathing of the swept mahogany rail, along with stick balusters and fretted ends, complemented by panelling below. A high dado rail in the hall continues up the staircase. The room on the right features elliptical arches surrounding a 20th-century fireplace. The cellar boasts a tunnel-vaulted ceiling that supports the hall floor.

The property includes subsidiary features such as a rubblestone wall attached to the left, which curves forward to enclose the front garden. Each slab of the clay tile coping is marked with a crown and the letter P, believed to originate from the local Poulet brickworks. The Ham Hill stone gate piers, topped with pyramidal caps, support double iron gates. The gates curve down toward the center and feature iron balls at the sides and center. The rails are designed with long and short sections, and a horizontal band of circles runs across the center, topped with wavy spikes, while the spaces between the rails at the top are filled with inverted semi-circles.
