Description
Ivy Cottage and the adjoining cottage date from the late 16th to early 17th century, with significant alterations in the late 20th century. The cottages are constructed with roughcast over rubble, with asbestos slate roofs. The left gable end has a coped verge, and there are brick stacks to the right gable end and to the left of the cross passage in Ivy Cottage, alongside the right gable end of the adjacent cottage.
The original plan for Ivy Cottage comprised three cells and a cross passage, featuring an unheated inner room. It is now a two-cell and cross passage layout, while the adjoining cottage is of a two-cell plan. The building has two and one-and-a-half storeys and has a 2:4 bay arrangement. It features modern metal casement windows. Ivy Cottage has leaded windows with gabled dormers, a large four-light window to the right of the entrance, and a small window between the third and fourth bays to the right. The entrance to Ivy Cottage is between the first and second bays to the right, with a modern studded plank door and a gabled porch. The adjoining cottage has an entrance between the first and second bays to the left. A two-light chamfered mullioned window is reportedly located at the rear of Ivy Cottage.
Inside the adjoining cottage is a stud and plank partition. The interior of Ivy Cottage was not inspected, but it is said to contain chamfered spine beams with step and runout stops, a diamond panel of plasterwork in the upper storey, and three pairs of jointed cruck trusses. An early photograph, held by the owner, demonstrates that both chimneys had shallow projections, one to the left of the entrance and the other on the right return gable end—where a bread oven is now located. The purpose of these projections is not known.
