Description

Murlinch End is a house dating from the early 19th century, with possible earlier fabric to the rear, and incorporating later extensions from the 20th and 21st centuries. The house is constructed of lias stone, which is predominantly rendered and painted, with slate, clay tile, and zinc sheet roofs. Brick chimney stacks are present on the main range, while a single-bay addition to the north-east corner has an asbestos slate roof and brick stack. A further brick stack serves one of the rear lean-tos.

The house has a roughly L-shaped plan. The principal range is joined to a late 19th-century single-storey entrance range on its north-east side. A probable mid-19th century two-storey addition of one bay extends from the north-east corner, and several single-storey lean-to additions are situated at the rear.

The south-east facing front elevation is symmetrical with deep eaves. A pair of French doors, likely dating from the late 20th century, are centrally positioned on the ground floor, marking the original entrance location. Either side of these doors are early 19th-century timber sash windows with 20 panes. Three similar first-floor windows have 16 panes each. A late 19th-century single-storey extension projects to the right, and incorporates a door under a timber hood in its gable. The windows on the side and rear elevations are mostly early 21st-century hardwood casements with double-glazing. Gables feature a 19th-century sash window with marginal glazing in the north-east wall and a mid-20th century metal-framed casement within a round-arched opening in the opposite wall. A former doorway in the south-west gable has been replaced with a window. The rear lean-tos have monopitched roofs; the one on the right-hand end extends beyond the north-west corner of the house but has been shortened on its south-east side. It may represent the remaining portion of a rear range shown on a mid-19th century tithe map.
