Description
St. Aldhelm's Well, located to the west of Doulting Manor, is an 18th-century well head made of dressed stone. Water emerges from a low opening in a stone wall that is set into a bank and flows through a shallow channel with dressed stone sides. On either side of the spring area, there are flanking rubble walls that enclose it. There is also a further section of walling along the roadside that extends approximately southwest from each side of the well. Although it is a medieval site, most of what is visible today has been rebuilt. This well is considered one of the most authentic holy wells in Somerset. It is historically significant as it is believed to be the place where St. Aldhelm died during his visitation in AD 709.
