Description

Orchard Millhouse, Mill and Waterwheel is a miller's house, corn mill, waterwheel, and attached range of outbuildings, now serving as a dwelling and museum. It dates from the 18th century. The miller's house and mill are constructed from red sandstone random rubble, with the millhouse rendered and featuring pilaster strips. The roof is hipped and covered with asbestos slate, and it has overhanging eaves with brick stacks rising from the eaves on the right and center at the junction with the mill.

The building has a plan where the mill and millhouse are under one roof, with the waterwheel located on the south side and a long range of outbuildings attached to the southeast. It is three stories tall with a facade divided into two sections. The right side is the rendered dwelling, which has 16-pane sash windows and a central panelled door, along with a lean-to single-storey addition that features a plank door and a 16-pane sash window. The mill has openings only on the lower two storeys, with segmental-headed openings and a loft door above the entrance.

There is an independently roofed hipped wing made of random rubble, which is two stories high and has three bays, featuring early 19th-century leaded iron casements and central double doors, with a single storey at the east end. The overshot waterwheel is located on the south front of the mill and was restored in the mid-20th century with wooden paddles and an iron frame. The interior contains corn milling machinery along with additional imported machinery and other items that form a museum collection.
