Description

The Church of St Pancras is a parish church dating from the 15th century, with a north aisle added in 1839 and restoration work completed in 1872. Notable fittings were added in the 1920s. The church is constructed of coursed squared red sandstone and features tiled roofs with decorative ridge tiles. It has a three-bay nave, a three-bay north aisle, a vestry, a chancel, a west tower, and a south porch. The three-stage embattled tower has diagonal buttresses, a stair turret at the north-west corner, a moulded plinth, and two-light bell openings. The windows are mostly two- and three-light Perpendicular style, many of which have been restored. The west door features a pointed arch with a three-light window above it, and there is a gabled porch with a sundial dated 1643. A rood loft stair turret is located at the south-east corner, and the north aisle is buttressed.

Inside, the church has a plastered interior with a three-bay standard Perpendicular arcade featuring pointed arches. The north aisle has a 19th-century open wagon roof, while the wagon roofs of the nave and chancel were restored and gilded in 1935. The chancel arch is wave moulded. There are 16th-century bench ends, and a screen and gallery at the west end designed by Ninian Comper, along with a font cover, figures on the rood beam, and eight stained glass windows. The communion rails date from 1677 and were acquired from Brompton Ralph in 1910, along with the organ. The north wall of the nave displays funeral hatchments, and there is a painted Royal Coat of Arms in the north aisle.
