Description

Little Court is a house that dates back to the 16th century, with enlargements made in the 18th century and mid-19th century, and restoration completed in the late 20th century. It is constructed of red sandstone random rubble, with the render removed, and features slate roofs that are hipped to the right behind a parapet. The building has brick stacks and an open hall house that was extended to the south, likely in the 18th century, and to the north in the mid-19th century. The earlier entrance, which was originally on the south front, is now located on the west side.

The south front of the house is two stories high and has three bays on the left and one bay on the right. It features casement windows with glazing bars under hood moulds, and on the ground floor, there are Venetian windows flanking a glazed door with a full-height canted bay, along with three-light sash windows. The entrance is now on the left return.

Inside, the open hall house at the west end runs north-south and includes four pairs of jointed crucks and exposed windbraces, likely ceiled in the late 16th century. Half of an eight-panel moulded compartment ceiling remains, and there is a plaster overmantel upstairs on the south wall featuring a coat of arms in a strapwork cartouche with figures, along with plaster decoration on the partition. The entire dining room has mid-19th century painted decoration depicting fairies, fruit, flowers, and views of the locality, showcasing charming amateur work of quite a high standard. Little Court served as the rectory until the early 20th century.
