Description

A group of four houses, numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 (Brookfield), also known as Glenview Cottages, was built around 1897 by George and Peto. Constructed from coursed and squared rubble, the cottages feature coped verges with decorative scrolled kneelers and stone-tiled roofs. The chimneys are ashlar and notably distinctive: three are very large with chamfered corners, four are diagonally set in pairs, and one has a projecting base. They are arranged in a U-shaped frontage and represent the Tudor style. The arrangement is two bays, one bay, two bays, one bay, and one bay; houses to each side and the central pair have front-facing gables. The windows are predominantly two and three-light stone mullioned windows, some with cambered heads, cornices, dripstones, stopped labels, and square-paned leaded lights. There are four door openings, two facing the front, and one on each return. The door surrounds are dressed stone with moulded cambered heads and labels. The entrance to number 4 has been altered, with the original door removed and replaced by a glazed panel. These cottages exemplify the neo-vernacular style of Ernest George and were built for W S Hodgkinson of Glencot as staff accommodation.
