Description
Wookey Hole Paper Mill is a paper mill built around 1860, now used for exhibitions and as part of a factory with offices. It was constructed for W S Hodgkinson and has undergone later alterations. The building features coursed and squared rubble with freestone dressings, dressed alternating quoins, and slate roofs with coped verges and copings at roof divisions. It has large gabled oblong roof ventilators with slate roofs and a brick stack. The road-facing side has three storeys and 18 bays on the first floor, predominantly featuring 20-pane metal casements in freestone surrounds with cambered heads and emphasized keys, with some windows having louvred shutters. There are three stone mullioned and transomed windows to the left of the ground floor. To the left, there is a shallow gabled wing with a segmental arch door opening on the first floor and paired doors, accessed by a later steel gallery with plain railings. Between the wing and the main portion of the building is a segmental-headed throughway. At the rear, there are extensive attached ranges in a similar style, including one with a gabled ashlar bellcote topped with a windvane.
