Description

This is a country house, built in the 1887 by the architectural practice of George and Peto for W S Hodgkinson. It is constructed of coursed and squared rubble with coped verges featuring ball finials, and prominent ashlar stacks, some of which are polygonal and grouped. The roof is covered with stone slates and lead raingoods, and a rainwater head is dated 1887. The house is of irregular plan and built in a Jacobean style. It has a basement, two storeys and an attic, with a 2:1:3 bay entrance frontage. Windows are stone mullioned, with 2, 3 and 4 lights, some containing transoms and leaded lights. A projecting porch features diagonal buttresses and a moulded 4-centred arch door opening, leading to an elaborate panelled inner door with carved heads. The ground slopes away to the rear, resulting in a rear elevation of four storeys. Terraces are connected by staircases and have strapwork parapets and a balcony. The interior is richly fitted in a 17th-century style, with panelling, coffered ceilings, and decorative chimneypieces. A main ground floor room includes a large inglenook fireplace with fitted settles; the dining room has built-in cupboards; and the library has fitted shelving. A staircase has carved baluster panels. The building has been virtually unaltered both internally and externally. Illustrations appeared in The Building News in May 1887, and architects' drawings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1887, now held at the Royal Institute of British Architects.
