Description
Two houses, built in the early 19th century, stand on the south side of High Street, Chard. The houses are stuccoed with painted stone dressings, have a slate roof with stepped coping to the left gable end, and brick ridge and end stacks. They are arranged with a double-depth plan, each house having a two-window range with adjoining staircase halls. The houses present a four-window facade, with 8/8-pane sashes to the first floor. Number 51 has a carriage entrance with an elliptical arch on the far left. Two adjacent doorcases are centrally positioned, featuring painted, panelled pilasters and reveals under a moulded cornice. They contain six-panel doors, with the upper panels now glazed, and overlights. Flanking these doors are rectangular four-light bay windows with late 19th-century horned sashes of 1/1-panes. The interior was not inspected. Early 19th-century forecourt railings run along the front, set on a stone plinth and feature palmette tops with urn finials at intervals.
