Description
The railway bridge at Nethercot, built around 1860, carries the railway line from Taunton to Watchet. It is constructed from red sandstone and conglomerate, featuring coursed, squared, dressed masonry and an ashlar archivolt above the arch. The bridge has a single arch with a splayed base and rusticated voussoirs, but it does not have a parapet. The curved walls connect to the bank and are extended on the northeast side with quoins located about 20 meters behind Nos 1 and 2 Nethercot. Much of the sandstone used in its construction was sourced from a nearby quarry on the southwest side. This impressive bridge is part of an attractive group with Nos 1 and 2 Nethercot and is considered one of the most notable railway bridges on the West Somerset Railway, which was initiated in 1859 and completed to Watchet in 1862.
