Description
Combe Florey House is a house built in the early 18th century. It features a facade made of ashlar red sandstone with coursed rubble returns and yellow sandstone dressings. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, and there is a dentil moulded cornice along with brick stacks. The house is two stories tall and has five bays, with sash windows. The first-floor windows are set in moulded surrounds, while the ground-floor windows have Gibbs surrounds with stepped voussoirs. The central doorcase also has a Gibbs surround and a pediment, leading to a 6-light glazed door. This entrance is approached by a double flight of seven steps, which are flanked by stone balusters. To the left, there is a three-bay return, and to the right, a six-bay return. Inside, there is an early 18th-century frayed newel staircase with twisted balusters. The house was the residence of Evelyn Laugh from 1956 until his death in 1966.
