Description
The Combe Florey War Memorial is a cross built in 1920. It is made of coarsely dressed stone. The memorial features a cross on a square base and a sloping square plinth with recessed panels on each face. The tapering square shaft is topped with a square wheel cross.
On the front (south) face of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE EIGHT PARISHIONERS WHO FELL, AND OF THE FORTY FIVE WHO, FROM THIS PARISH, SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919." Below this, the base is inscribed with "THIS CROSS IS THE GIFT OF THE PEOPLE OF COMBE FLOREY, 1920." The east face of the plinth lists the names of the fallen along with their place and date of death. The north face contains the inscription: "IF OUR TIME BE COME, LET US DIE MANFULLY FOR OUR BRETHREN AND LET US NOT STAIN OUR HONOUR. MACC. IX.10 1939 - 1945 (NAMES)."
