Description
Winter's Tower is a tower located in Combe Wood, built in the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed of red sandstone random rubble, rendered on the upper three storeys. The tower stands five storeys tall and consists of a single cell. Notable architectural features include pilaster buttresses at the northeast and northwest corners, projecting stone platt bands on the second and third floors, a cyma-moulded eaves string, and a parapet with angle merlons and renewed angle gutter spouts.
On the south elevation, which faces the road, there is a central entrance with the remains of a timber arch above the door. Each upper floor features a central pointed-arched window opening, with the first floor window showing remnants of a cusped timber window head. Flanking narrow windows are present on each floor, with timber lintels on the ground and first floors, and triangular-headed windows above. The upper floors have remnants of traceried heads.
The rear (north) elevation has a central external chimney stack, with a blind triangular-headed narrow opening on each floor and flanking three-light wooden mullioned windows that include wooden stanchions. The ground floor right and first floor left windows are moulded and likely date from the late 16th century, indicating they were reused.
The side elevations feature central pointed-arched window openings on the three upper floors, along with a central door opening on the east side at ground level.
Inside, there is a smoke-blackened fireplace recess with a side fireplace recess, and sockets for joists that have been removed. The lower three floors are plastered from a later period of use as a habitation. At the time of inspection, the tower was in a derelict state.
Winter's Tower was built by the Winter family as a keeper's cottage and an eyecatcher in the landscape.
