Description

A terrace of six early 19th-century houses stands on Salmon Parade in Bridgwater. The buildings are constructed of Flemish-bond brick with stone lintels and cills, topped by a continuous pantile roof with a steeper pitch at the front than the back. There are two brick stacks to each party wall, the front ones being square. The houses have a double-depth plan, with one room to the front of each. They are three storeys high and feature an eight-window range, with numbers 5 and 6 each having two windows. The first floors have small two-light casement windows, with a larger 20th-century window in number 4. Keyed lintels are painted on the lower floors. The second floors have eight-pane sashes, except for number 3 (which has a 20th-century window) and number 4 (a late 19th-century horned two-pane sash). The ground floors have eight-pane sashes, although numbers 1 and 4 have two-pane sashes, and number 3 possesses 20th-century windows on both floors. Doors are paired at numbers 2 and 3, and 4 and 5. Numbers 4 and 5 have painted gauged semicircular brick arches over their doorways, with blank tympana above. Numbers 1 and 4 feature an early 19th-century door with two vertical panels at the top and two horizontal ones at the base; the remaining doors are 20th-century replacements. A recessed rainwater downpipe is located between numbers 3 and 4. The left return has a diagonal joint towards the top right corner, suggesting a former mansard roof. Faintly painted on this return wall are the words 'TAYLOR COAL & SALT STORE OIL AND COTTON CAKE'. The interiors were not inspected.
