Description

8 and 9 Binford Place are two houses built in the late 18th century or early 19th century. They are constructed of Flemish bond brick with stone coping, featuring a painted stone cornice, platband, and cills. The houses have a hipped plain tile roof and brick stacks on the party wall. They have a double-depth plan and rise to three storeys, with a symmetrical front that includes three windows for each house.

All windows are sashes set under flat gauged brick arches, with the second floor featuring 3/6 panes, the first floor having full-height 6/9 panes with balconettes, and the ground floor displaying 6/6 panes, some of which have crown glass. The segmental-shaped balconettes are adorned with lead ornament on the vertical railings and have a platband at cill level. The recessed 6-panel doors on the outer sides have raised-and-fielded upper panels and beaded lower panels, with No. 9 having a glazed top section, all topped by an ornamental semicircular fanlight. The open pediments of the doorcases rest on Tuscan-style pilasters, with panelled reveals and soffits. No. 8, on the left, features a cast-iron lion-mask knocker, a restored doorcase, and painted window arches. The doorcase of No. 9 has a dentilled frieze on the pediment and the cornices of the pilasters.

Inside No. 8, there is an open-well, open-string staircase located at the rear right, featuring stick balusters, fretted ends, and a wreathed mahogany handrail. The cornice at the top of the stairwell is moulded at both the top and bottom, with a straight chamfered centre decorated with small finely-moulded Greek urns and laurel wreaths. The interior also includes moulded architraves and most doors are 6-panel, with those on the lower floors having added moulding. No. 9 was not inspected.
