Description

Madey Mill Farmhouse and attached outbuildings are located on East Street. This farmhouse dates from the 18th century and was modified in the 19th century. It is constructed from cut and squared ham stone with ashlar dressings. The east wing features a plain clay tile roof, while the west wing has a roof of Welsh slates, both topped with stepped coped gables. The building has brick and stone chimney stacks and is designed in a T-plan with two storeys and an attic.

The east elevation has three bays, showcasing mullioned windows with three lights, set in beaded architraves. These windows include horizontal bars and central iron-framed opening lights, all with plain glazing. In the lower bay two, there is an early 19th-century door beneath a plain fanlight, situated in a semi-circular arched recess, with matching timber panels in the reveals.

The north elevation also consists of three bays. The first bay is the end gable of the east block, featuring a three-light mullioned window on the ground floor, a two-light window on the first floor, and a two-light casement under a timber lintel in the attic. The second bay has a two-light mullioned window, while the third bay contains three-light mullioned windows on both levels, with some upper windows retaining rectangular leaded glazing. In the lower bay two, there is a six-panel door under a radial-glazed fanlight in a semi-circular arched recess, complete with an architrave and plain reveals.

The interior has not been seen. On the west side, there is a single-storey dairy building with a clay tiled roof and a shaped coped north gable. This dairy is connected to the farmhouse by covered ways on both the north and south sides of a very small courtyard, creating an interesting group that is associated with the older Madey Mill. The house may have been reshaped around 1800 by Jesse Hopkins.
