Description
The walls enclosing the garden with a south terrace, located about 100 meters south-west of Chipley Park, are likely from the 17th century, with 18th century brickwork. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring a flat sandstone coping and a random rubble splayed base at the terrace. The walls have a roughly square plan with a raised terrace on the west front, where the land drops steeply. There is a central curved projecting bay, and the walls ramp down on the west side, featuring a central gateway. The north side has a gateway about 3 meters high with a semi-circular headed doorway in the north-east corner, while the south side has a height of about 2 meters. The terrace on the west front resembles a bastion and serves as an impressive landscape feature. The tithe map indicates that the original 17th century Chipley Park, which is now demolished, extended through the east wall, suggesting this area is part of the original 17th century garden layout.
