Description

The garden walls date from the mid to late 15th century, with alterations made in the early 16th century and a rebuilding around 1765. The wall on the front (west) side is constructed of mid to late 15th century English bond red brick, featuring blocked bee boles. The upper courses are made of 18th century brick. There is an entrance in the center with a hood mould over a four-centred triple-chamfered arch, which has a label mould above a worn stone panel set in a crow-stepped gable. The other walls, rebuilt around 1765, are made of Flemish bond brick. The walls enclose an area of approximately 110 by 100 meters. The bishops of Fulham Palace in the 16th and 17th centuries were known for their botanical imports from around the world into this garden.
