Description
Almshouses, dating from 1869, designed by J.P. Seddon. They are constructed of ashlar with a red tile roof and are built in the Gothic style. The building forms an L-shaped block, comprising a ten-bay range at right angles to the road and a two-bay range at the far end. It is a single storey with semi-dormers. The ground floor slightly projects under a continuous tiled roof, with shared entrances for each pair of units arranged beneath, alternating with canted bay windows. The doorways have pointed heads and timber entrance doors featuring a 'ray' motif. Each upper-storey unit has a two-light mullioned and transomed window, with a gable in the roof. An eaves cornice breaks out over Gothic shafts, with tall, multi-shafted chimneys. At the west end is a tower with a tall mansard roof and two tiers of arcading, the lower tier containing statues. An inscription on the end gable reads 'Sir William Powell's Almshouses; founded 1680. Rebuilt 1869. God's providence our inheritance'. The building features much carved decoration overall.
