Description

Bindon House is a country house that is said to have origins in the 17th century, with a refronting in the early 19th century. A west wing and entrance porch were added around 1865, and an east wing with Flemish gables was added in 1880 but was demolished in the 1930s. The house features roughcast over rubble, slate roofs, decorative ridge tiles, and Tudor-style chimney pots.

The plan includes two full-height curved bays with a shaped gable on the south front, and the west wing, which contains a former dining room, is set back and linked by a single-storey loggia with a porch. The south front has two storeys with an attic and is arranged in a three-one-three-two bay configuration. It features shaped Flemish gables flanking the entrance, a moulded cornice, a moulded plinth, and twelve-pane sash windows with hood moulds. A square-headed glazed door is approached by three steps, and there is an ashlar porch on the left return with a gable end, square pilasters, and the crest of the Warre family.

Inside, there are 19th-century fittings, a panelled library, an imposing top-lit stair with a first-floor gallery, and a tessellated floor. The property was purchased by Henry Warre in 1862 and had previously been tenanted by relatives of Spencer Perceval, the Prime Minister who was murdered in 1812. The Flemish gables are reminiscent of those at Woodlands House in Wellington Without.
