Description
King Alfred School (Main Block) is a small country villa that has been converted into a school. It dates from the early 19th century and features a rendered and colorwashed exterior, with a dentil eaves cornice that supports troughing. The main section of the building has a hipped slate roof, while an addition has a double-Roman tile roof. The building is roughly square in shape and includes a single-storey addition to the north with a flat roof and a parapet with coping.
The garden front faces west and consists of one-to-one bays, with the right bay featuring shallow full-height segmental bows. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows, and the ground floor has a 15-pane and an 18-pane sash window. The entrance front has two bays in a matching style, with a porch that includes pilasters, a cornice, and a parapet, along with a segmental door opening and paired two-panelled doors.
To the north, there is a later 19th-century addition made of brick and rubble, which is two storeys high with an attic and mainly features 2-light casements with glazing bars. Inside, the building boasts a good cantilever staircase, fireplaces, doors, plaster cornices, and a hall with stone setts. It is noted to be situated on a medieval site and was formerly known as Edington Manor.
