Description
No 17 High Street is a shop in a row that was formerly a house, likely built in the 18th century. It is constructed from local stone that has been cut and squared, and is colourwashed with ashlar dressings. The building features asbestos cement slates behind a parapet between abutments and has brick chimney stacks at either end. It stands three storeys tall with two bays.
The ground floor has an early 20th-century shopfront of good quality, which includes late 20th-century small pane windows. The shopfront is flanked by panelled Doric pilasters with console brackets supporting the fascia hood. To the left, there is a Regency style four-panelled door with a plain fanlight beneath the continued fascia. The first floor has two eight-pane sash windows, while the second floor features nine-pane sashes, all set beneath a cornice and shallow parapet. In the centre of the first floor, there is a wrought iron bracket with a hanging sign, and to the right, a notable 18th-century lead rainwater stackhead.
The interior has not been seen, but a report indicates the presence of partially concealed timber posts and a rear cill beam, suggesting that the original construction was similar to the buildings at Nos 20-20 High Street opposite.
