Description
The Halse War Memorial is a First World War memorial that dates from 1918 and was altered after the Second World War. It is made of local stone and features a bronze plaque.
The memorial is designed as a plain Latin cross with chamfered arms and shaft, standing on a base of three roughly-hewn octagonal stone steps. This base is set on a wider octagonal platform with moulded edges. An angled stone is set into the base, to which the bronze plaque is affixed. The plaque is inscribed with the following text: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF LIEUT/ NEVILLE MONTGOMERY, 29TH BATTALION CANADIAN INFANTRY, YOUNGER / SON OF THE RECTOR OF THIS PARISH, / WHO FELL IN ACTION AT THE BATTLE OF LENS AUG 21 1917 / AND THE FOLLOWING FROM THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR," followed by the names of eight men lost during the First World War. It continues, "AND OF THE FOLLOWING FROM THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 - 1945," followed by the names of five men who died during that conflict.
