Description

Hannah More's Cottage is a 17th-century cottage, later altered, situated on the east side of Lower North Street in Cheddar. The construction is of painted rubble, with a double Roman and pantile roof and a central brick stack. It features a cross passage plan and a two-story frontage divided into two bays and one bay. The windows are 19th-century 2- and 3-light casements, with a 20th-century casement to the left of the ground floor; the first-floor windows are located under the eaves. There is a door opening between the bays, with a plank door, and a further door opening to the right, which features a 19th-century four-panelled door. The interior on the right-hand side has had the first floor removed to create a meeting hall, with access to the house via a doorway featuring a 4-centred head. The left-hand ground floor room retains a ceiling with an axial beam, and an open fireplace with a 4-centred lintol. The cottage is primarily listed due to its association with Hannah More, who used it for a time as a school.
