Description
No 91 High Street is a cottage that dates back to the 17th century and is part of a row of buildings. It is constructed from local stone, with a pebbledash render and an ashlar plinth. The roof is made of double Roman clay tiles and features plain gables, along with brick chimney stacks at each end. The cottage has two storeys and four bays.
In the first bay, there is a 20th-century three-light casement window below and a timber ovolo-mould frame adapted to a two-light casement above. The second bay contains a 20th-century part-glazed door in a heavy frame with a wooden architrave, along with a small two-light casement above it. Bays three and four feature nine-pane sash windows on both levels.
At the rear, there is a projecting outbuilding with a 17th-century boarded door set at an angle. Although the interior was not seen, it is reported to have an arch-braced truss and a ceiling beam with run-out stops to a hollow chamfer, with other remnants suspected. This house was owned by Hugh Sexey, the founder of Sexey's Hospital, and later by his widow in the early 17th century, and it may have served as his residence.
