Description

The Old Brewery House is a house located in a row on High Street in Bruton, dating from the 17th century and later. It is constructed from local stone rubble with Doulting stone dressings and features a stone slate roof between coped gables, with brick chimney stacks at each end. The building has two storeys and an attic, comprising three bays. It has a plinth and four-light ovolo-moulded mullioned windows under labels in the outer bays. The second bay contains a wide cambered arched opening with a late 19th-century door and sidelights infill. Above this, there is the scolded base of an angled oriel window, which now serves as a balcony for a 24-pane sash window, complete with a wrought iron balustrade and ornamental lead capping. The roof has two 19th-century dormer windows.

While the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to have a 4-bay collar beam truss roof frame, stud and panel screens with bead moulding on each side of the entrance lobby, and fireplaces with depressed 4-centre arches that are moulded. The east room features complete early 17th-century panelling with a wooden cornice. The building belongs to Sexey's Hospital and was first mentioned in 1630. It served as a maltsters' house in the 18th century and was converted to a silk mill at the rear during the same period. It was converted back to a brewery in 1853, with the brewery buildings being demolished around 1930.
