Description

Lower Tarr Farmhouse is a farmhouse of the 16th century, with extensions dating to the 17th century, and a date of 1691 noted on a panel within. It is constructed of red sandstone rubble, partly rendered, with slate roofs. The property has stone stacks, one gabled with a full-height curing chamber projection on its return, and brick stacks to the left of the entrance and in the bay to the left, marking the original block. Originally a two-cell house with a cross passage, the farmhouse was extended one bay to the south, and wings were added to the north and south sides. The building is two storeys high with an irregular pattern of windows. A blocked window is visible on the first floor to the left, alongside a leaded casement, and to the right, remains of a four-light mullion window with ovolo moulding and a leaded casement. On the ground floor, a leaded casement is situated to the right of a 20th-century glazed door, with a wooden trellis porch on a rendered brick base. The right-hand bay has a tripartite sash window with a French window. The interior, which was not inspected during assessment, is said to contain jointed cruck trusses, chamfered beams with run-out stops, and plasterwork in the first-floor north wing. A panel dated 1691 with an indistinct coat of arms lies beneath later plaster, and further plasterwork is found in a room over the hall.
