Description

Gaulden Manor is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations from the 17th century. It is constructed of red sandstone random rubble masonry, some of which is rendered, and features a slate roof with brick stacks. The building has two storeys, with the main block featuring a gabled porch and a hall to the right. To the left is a longer, lower service wing that has a catslide roof over the outer bay. The windows are irregularly placed, including a three-light mullioned window on the right side of the first floor, a six-light window below it, and a four-light window in the porch gable. The left side of the first floor has a pair of three-light mullions, while the ground floor has a four-light window with ovolo mouldings. The porch has a square-headed moulded door frame that leads to a fine 16th-century 12-panel framed door.

Inside, the house is notable for its exuberant plaster decoration from around 1660. The hall features three moulded ceiling panels, with the center panel having a pendant and the outer panels adorned with proverbs, figures, and floral decoration. The frieze displays scenes from the Old Testament, and the overmantel is decorated with figures flanking coats of arms and strapwork. There is a four-centred arch fireplace, and to the right, a 17th-century carved partition separates a space referred to as the "Chapel," which has moulded ceiling compartments and a frieze of Raphaelesque strapwork. The Great Chamber upstairs also features plasterwork overmantel, a four-centred arch fireplace, and a coved ceiling. The house includes a Jacobean dog-leg staircase.
