Description
The Dovecote, dating from the 15th century, is constructed from random rubble and Doulting stone, featuring ashlar quoins and coved freestone eaves. It has a stone slate roof with gable ends, moulded kneelers, and cruciform finials. The structure is a single-storey rectangular building with a 4-centred chamfered arch stone door frame on the south elevation, which includes a keyed stone relieving arch at its midpoint. The door is vertical boarded and lopped. There is also a later square-headed door opening on the north side, possibly from the 19th century. The east gable features a single-light 4-centred head stone-framed opening with spandrels. Inside, the dovecote has three bays supported by two 'A' frame trusses with collars and a single row of purlins, along with ashlared rafters. It contains approximately 670 nesting holes arranged in three tiers on four sides. The Dovecote is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Somerset County No 291).
