Description
Pyleigh Manor is a farmhouse that dates back to the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th century, and it is dated 1641 and 1828. The building features roughcast over random rubble, a plain tile roof, and red sandstone stacks at the gable ends and to the left of the cross passage, with a large external stack on the north wing gable end. The layout consists of three cells and a cross passage, with a kitchen added to the north front.
The south front is two stories high with irregular fenestration. The first floor has two central four-light casements, while the outer bays feature three-light windows. The ground floor outer bays have early 20th-century four-light ovolo moulded mullions that replicate earlier windows found elsewhere in the house. To the left of the early 20th-century half-timbered porch with brick infill and a lean-to roof, there are concrete semi-circular steps leading to a four-centred arch doorway with moulded jambs. Above the door is a date plaque inscribed with "1641/ RHHI (Robert and Jane Harris)/1828/RWESQ (Robert Winter Esq)" along with an Imperial Fire Insurance Company plaque.
Inside, there is a fine moulded nine-panel compartment ceiling to the right of a well-crafted stud and panel partition. An imported late 19th-century stained glass panel is located in an inserted corridor that provides access to two rooms on the left, which feature chamfered beams with stops. The kitchen also has a chamfered bressumer across the north end, with arched heads incised to the left and right of the fireplace. Upstairs, there are four-centred arch stone fireplaces with moulded jambs. The roof is reputed to date from the early 19th century.
