Description
The entrance gateway located about 250 meters southeast of Sparkford Hall is a 19th-century structure featuring gate piers, gates, and wing walls. It is constructed from local grey lias stone with Doulting stone dressings and includes wrought iron gates. The gate piers are square and made of ashlar, featuring a chamfered plinth and classical moulded cornice tops that terminate with a flat step. The gates have alternating spike and twist spear uprights, with circular decorations on the middle rails. The side pieces sweep up to the piers, leading into wing walls that curve double, averaging one meter in height and topped with shaped coping. This gateway is an important element in the street scene, situated at a corner and contributing to the setting of Sparkford Hall.
