Description

Sparkford Hill Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating from the 17th century and later. It is constructed from local grey lias stone, which is cut and squared in various thicknesses, and features a plain clay tile roof with some natural stone and reconstructed stone slabs, topped with stepped coped gables and brick chimney stacks. The building has a T-plan layout and stands two storeys high with an attic, presenting a two-bay roadside elevation.

The windows are mostly ovolo moulded timber framed casements. The first bay has 4-light windows with timber lintels, the upper window featuring square leaded panes. The second bay projects as a gable and includes a 3-light window above and a 16-pane sash window below, both under timber lintels, with a blocked attic window in the gable. In the angle of the building, there is a 20th-century lean-to porch below and a 3-light casement window above.

The north elevation was originally three bays but has been extended to five. It features ovolo mould timber windows in the upper bay one, mezzanine bay three, and lower bay four, all with square or rectangular leaded panes. There is a plain horizontal bar casement in bay one, similar casements in ovolo mould frames in lower bay five, and a blank space above. A plain door under a timber lintel is located in the lower bay. Additionally, a lower two-storey extension on the west gable incorporates an early timber casement at the upper level.

The interior has not been seen, but it is reported to contain double ovolo mould posts, 17th-century door frames, and 17th-century doors at the first-floor level, along with a collar truss roof made of original timbers. The farmhouse is also known as Sparkford or Manor Farmhouse.
