War Memorial in the Churchyard of the Church of St Bartholomew

DESCRIPTION: the war memorial is located within the south-west part of the churchyard of St Bartholomew’s Church and stands on a two-stepped octagonal platform. It comprises a square pedestal which is tapered and chamfered to form an octagonal top, and from the torus above rises a tapered square shaft surmounted by a pilgrim’s or Canterbury-style cross, with the Chi-Rho symbol at its centre. The west face of the shaft is carved with four panels. The upper two panels are carved with a Celtic knotwork design. To the panel below is a relief carving of the figure of St George and the dragon set within a Classical arch. The panel to the bottom of the shaft is inscribed with the dates 1914-1918 and 1939-1945. To the west face of the pedestal, within a slightly recessed trapezium-shaped panel, is the inscription: TO OUR / GLORIOUS DEAD. Beneath, in relief lettering, is the quotation SO HE PASSED OVER / AND ALL THE TRUMPETS SOUNDED / FOR HIM ON THE OTHER SIDE. Beneath this is inscribed PILGRIM’S PROGRESS, identifying the quotation from the C17 work by John Bunyan.
