Description

The war memorial, erected around 1920, is located in the south-west part of the churchyard of St Bartholomew’s Church. It is made of carved stone and stands on a two-stepped octagonal platform. The memorial features a square pedestal that tapers and is chamfered to create an octagonal top. Above this, a tapered square shaft rises, topped with a pilgrim’s or Canterbury-style cross, which has the Chi-Rho symbol at its center.

The west face of the shaft includes four carved panels. The upper two panels display a Celtic knotwork design, while the lower panels feature a relief carving of St George and the dragon within a Classical arch. The bottom panel is inscribed with the dates 1914-1918 and 1939-1945. On the west face of the pedestal, there is a slightly recessed trapezium-shaped panel with the inscription: "TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD." Below this, in relief lettering, is the quotation: "SO HE PASSED OVER / AND ALL THE TRUMPETS SOUNDED / FOR HIM ON THE OTHER SIDE," which is identified as coming from the 17th-century work "Pilgrim’s Progress" by John Bunyan.
