Description

Maltkiln Hill Farm is a farmhouse that primarily dates from the 18th century but has earlier origins. It is constructed from local stone rubble with a stone slate roof on the main elevation, which is hipped at the southeast corner, while the gables are plain. The building has brick end chimney stacks and is arranged in a U-plan, although the original layout is uncertain as it has been filled in.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and features five bays on the east elevation. The west windows have 20-pane sash frames, but the upper bays one, three, and five contain 18th-century wooden frames with iron casements that are two-light and leaded. There is a boarded door in bay three, which has a pitched roof hood supported by wooden brackets.

Inside, there are several notable features including a fielded panel partition on the north side of the entrance lobby, a bolection mould fireplace in the northwest room on the first floor, and significant remains of a malt kiln in the northwest gable wall. This includes a funnel at the loft level and a wooden grille next to the open fireplace on the ground floor. The roof frame of the main house is likely from the 17th century.

To the north side, there is a lean-to building that was formerly connected to the main house. At the rear, there are ruins of 18th-century pigsties with stone plank partitions, and a whey tank that is still linked to the former cheeseroom. This property functioned as a self-sufficient maltings and farm unit, which was tenanted by the Sly family, brewers from Wincanton, for many years, with the first recorded mention in 1690.
