Description
The Brick Kiln at NGR ST 0316 4350 is an early 19th-century updraught brick kiln that has been converted into a garage. It is constructed from irregular red bricks in Flemish bond and features a corrugated iron monopitch roof. The structure has a rectangular plan measuring approximately 4 by 8 metres.
On the north side, there are four segmental-headed openings spaced just above ground level, with one opening on the south side and three others likely hidden by a lean-to addition. There are double doors at the west end. These openings, which total around eight and are arranged opposite each other, served as the firing holes or 'eyes' of the kiln. Access to the kiln was originally through a side 'wicket', which has been bricked up during firing. The roof was designed to be temporary to allow for the escape of gases.
The kiln is believed to have been operational from the 1830s until the 1870s, when large-scale brick production in Bridgwater made small brickyards unviable. There was minimal brickmaking in West Somerset until the latter part of the 19th century, and this is the only known surviving example of an updraught brick kiln in the county.
