The Stables, Curved Walls and Piers to the Stable Yard, 20 Metres North West of Chilton Cantelo House

The Stables, along with the curved walls and piers to the stable yard, are located 20 metres northwest of Chilton Cantelo House. They date from the mid-19th century and were built as stables for the former manor house. The structure is made of local stone that is cut and squared, with Ham stone dressings, and features hipped roofs covered with Welsh slate. The building has an 'L' plan layout, primarily consisting of one storey, with a two-storey section at the end of the south wing. At the northeast corner between the wings, there is a stone bell turret.

The windows are timber casements with voussoired and keystoned arches, while the tall semi-circular arched doorways of the two-storey block are now filled in with a concrete block extension topped with a corrugated asbestos cement sheet roof on the south side of the west wing. The interiors have been adapted for school use, but they were not seen during the inspection.

The clock turret features crude scroll pilasters on each face, flanking a clock dial, and above it is a semi-circular open arched bell turret with a bell. The turret is topped with a lead-covered bell-hipped pyramidal roof and a stone finial. The curved stone walls surrounding the stable yard are approximately 2.5 metres high, with flat copings and massive circular stone piers that have heavy moulded caps.

This structure is not only an important part of the manor house estate and remains virtually complete, but it is also visually significant due to its relationship with St James' Church, as it forms the western boundary to the churchyard. The bell turret provides an interesting contrast to the west tower of the church.
