Description

This is a mid-to-late 19th century row of four buildings located on Swain Street. The buildings are constructed of squared, random rubble red sandstone with stone dressings and have slate roofs covered with ridge tiles. The row is two storeys high with attics. Nos. 7 and 8 each have three windows, featuring paired sash windows with semi-circular heads, dressed stone reveals, voussoirs, and keystones. Bracketed eaves are present, along with three gable dormer windows; the centre dormer has a semi-circular arched roof. Quoins are visible. Contemporary shop fronts feature moulded stone pilasters, four-light windows with semi-circular heads, shafts with leaf capitals, and carved spandrels. Plain doorways are positioned to the left of the shop fronts. Nos. 9 and 10 have three semi-circular dormer windows set into a raised front stone wall. These dormers feature stone surrounds to casement windows with traceried fanlights. A moulded stone cornice runs along the top. The first floor also has three paired sash windows, similar to those in Nos. 7 and 8. Modern shop fronts are now in place.
