Description

A row of six cottages was built around 1840, located immediately northwest of Barwick School. The cottages are constructed from local stone rubble with dressings of Ham stone, featuring Welsh slate roofs with coped gables and brick chimney stacks. The two--storey design includes a ten-bay main facade, with the outer bays projecting back and forward. Each end cottage has a gable attic window. Original entrance doors are located in bays two, four, seven, and nine, with the remaining entrances on the sides of the cottages. The ground floor windows are three-light, chamfered mullioned, while the first floor and attic windows are two-light. The windows contain cast iron diamond lattices with steel opening lights and leaded glass. It is likely that the cottages were built at the same time as the village school, and the southernmost cottage may have served as the schoolmaster’s residence. An original pump remains in the middle of the facade.
