Description

The Chilcompton War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was amended following the Second World War. It is made of granite and features a cross that stands on a three-tiered square plinth with a single step base. The front face of the cross includes a raised cross relief and raised lettering that reads '1914-1918 / IN / PROUD AND / GRATEFUL / MEMORY OF / THE MEN / OF / CHILCOMPTON / AND / DOWNSIDE / WHO GAVE THEIR / LIVES IN THE / GREAT WAR'. The names of those who died during the First World War are inscribed on the tiers below, along with the dedication 'THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE'. Additionally, the names of those who died during the Second World War have been added to the south side of the memorial.
