Description

This is a 17th-century house, later divided into two dwellings. The construction is of coursed and squared rubble, with some rendered areas, featuring alternating dressed stone quoins on the left side. The roof is covered with double-Roman tiles with a coped verge, and there are ashlar stacks with moulded caps, alongside a single brick stack. The house is two storeys high, with four bays. The ground floor has 2- and 3-light stone-mullioned windows with stopped labels and leaded lights. A 6-panelled door, with the top two panels glazed, provides access to No. 2 on the right, while a lower single-bay wing, likely added in the 18th century, contains 2-light stone-mullioned windows with leaded lights and an entrance with a reproduction ribbed door. A forecourt is enclosed by a rubble wall. The property is locally associated with the painter Thomas Gainsborough.
