Description
St Judes is a house and shop located on the south side of High Street in Axbridge, dating from the late 15th century to early 16th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame, a double-Roman tile roof, and rendered walls. It has two storeys and two bays, with 20th-century three-light metal casements on the first floor. The ground floor has a flat-roofed shop front that slightly projects, obscuring a 16th-century jetty supported by curved brackets. To the left is a door opening that contains a 16th-century ribbed and studded door set in a moulded wooden surround with a stopped top base.
Inside, there is a winder staircase with a moulded handrail and splat balusters. The interior also boasts late 16th-century moulded plaster friezes in two rear rooms, with the ground floor room featuring late 17th-century panelling on the fireplace wall. The fireplace has a bolection moulded surround, and the centre panel above it once held an oil painting. Additionally, there are two cupboards on the first floor, each with late 16th-century panelled doors.
