Description

The Red House is a late 18th-century house located on the north side of High Street in Cannington. It is constructed from coursed and squared red sandstone rubble, with emphasised chamfered quoins. The roof is double Roman tile, with a crested ridge, coped verges, and two 19th-century box dormers. Brick stacks with moulded caps are at the ends of the building.

The symmetrical frontage has two storeys and an attic, with five bays. It features 12-pane sash windows set nearly flush to the wall, with exposed sash boxes. The windows are framed by emphasised voussoirs with a prominent triple keystone above. The central doorway is set within an eared and moulded architrave, also with a triple keystone. A pediment supported by brackets sits above the door, and a later heraldic shield is set into the tympanum. The door itself is a 6-panelled design, with the top two panels glazed.

The principal ground floor rooms retain contemporary fireplaces and window shutters, and there is a contemporary staircase to the rear of the house.
